The Evolution of HyFlex at Lethbridge College (E)Track: Charting Teaching & Learning
HyFlex is a flexible course design model which gives learners the option of attending classes in-person, asynchronously, synchronously online, or a combination. Students can change their mode of attendance weekly or by topic, “based on flexibility, convenience, and learning style and needs. As such, when well developed, the HyFlex model can ensure choice, a more active approach to learning, and a high level of course satisfaction.” (Kyei-Blankson et al., 2014, p. 243).
HyFlex at Lethbridge College began as a pilot project in January 2021 as an option for instructors to investigate and implement to the degree of their choosing. With many changes amid the pandemic, the scope of roll-out quickly expanded, and instructors across the institution are now benefiting from technology-supported classrooms which better support the student experience.
This topic will be of interest to institutions seeking innovative and collaborative teaching methods within today’s educational context. Lethbridge College has adopted this flexible delivery option as an institution, but not without challenges along the way.
