Who knows what tomorrow will bring? Preparing our institutions for risky business (E)

May 5, 2019 | 14:45 - 16:45

Track: Thought Forums

We all take risks; we assess opportunity, weigh possibilities, and decide to move forward – or not. How can we work together to define clear strategies for risk mitigation? This session will discuss potential situations in which colleges and institutes may find themselves confronted with risk when recruiting international students: a medical outbreak that closes door to international students, unforeseen changes in policies that limit student mobility, an errant tweet that jeopardizes diplomatic stability, etc. Using examples such as these, this session will allow for thoughtful discussion on how colleges and institutes can assess and prepare for the unknown and how institutions can individually and collectively, mitigate risk.

Following a presentation of real-world examples of risk mitigation and using a customized risk-management template, participants will discuss and brainstorm individual and collective strategies for risk mitigation. In a closing plenary, participants will share and evaluate ideas from the group.
