Where Student Meets Parent: Closing the gap & reducing barriers to access (E/SI)

April 26, 2022 | 12:45 - 1:45

Location: Argyle A3
Track: Charting Teaching & Learning

Standing amidst the ebb and flow of social and economic tides, a unique opportunity to highlight the presence and needs of a historically under-recognised group of learners, parents and caregivers, presents itself.

Despite comprising an estimated one-quarter of students enrolled in colleges and institutes, parenthood or caregiving as a life experience is information that is rarely collected, tracked, or included within institutional equity, diversity, and inclusion frameworks. A shortcoming all too often results in barriers to access and the perpetuation of other social and economic inequities concurrent to the burden of unpaid care.

As recognition and acknowledgement are essential first steps for charting a path to success, join members of CICan’s ImpAct Student and Alumni Advisory Committee (ISAAC) for a frank presentation on the experiences of student parents and caregivers, and an examination of why their success is imperative for navigating contemporary social currents.
