Location: Room 109
Track: Steering Innovation

Covid-19 and long-standing challenges securing clinical placements for healthcare programs have severely limited opportunities for students to gain crucial workplace experience. The impact of these challenges is even more pronounced for students outside of large urban centres and for members of under-represented groups facing additional barriers to access. PSEs have been using in-person simulation facilities for many years, to increase the number and scope of opportunities for students to develop their skills and apply their knowledge in safe, low-risk environments. But now, more than ever, virtual simulations are emerging as a modality to help students develop a broader range of clinical competencies in a scalable, cost-effective way. In an impressive collaborative effort, CICan has been partnering with Simulation Canada and with colleges, institutes and universities from across the country, to offer students new and innovative WIL opportunities using virtual simulations. This collaboration encompassed the development of more than 120 virtual simulations in both French and English, in Nursing, Paramedecine and Med Lab and to make them freely available and openly accessible to Canadian educators and students.
