The Virtual Mobility Space in Higher Education (eMOVIES): An Alternative to Traditional Student Mobility (E/SI)

April 27, 2021 | 1:15 - 2:00

Track: Going Global

The current pandemic crisis jeopardizes traditional patterns of student mobility. As the pandemic continues, we, as international education practitioners, must begin to strategically reinvent our programs, modifying our inbound and outbound mobility models to fit the needs of the current climate and guarantee alternative options to students who are still searching for an international experience. Furthermore, we must ensure Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) can maintain and develop strategic partnerships with HEIs outside their home country during these challenging times. To provide an alternative to its members, the Inter-American Organization for Higher Education (OUI-IOHE) has developed and implemented the Virtual Mobility Space in Higher Education (eMOVIES, from its Spanish acronym Espacio de Movilidad Virtual en EducaciĆ³n Superior), with 85 HEIs participants from 13 countries and a total of 1,135 students engaged in mobility in 2020 only. The panel will first provide an overall description of the initiative and then give the opportunity to two participating institutions (Canada and Colombia) to share their own experience regarding this project.
