The EDI Journey at Selkirk College: from commitment to action to lasting change (E/SI)

In 2019, Selkirk College launched its new Strategic Plan, Building Remarkable Futures https://selkirk.ca/strategic-plan . A key commitment in the plan was a call to shift the culture at Selkirk College, and to improve practices and processes to be a more inclusive, equitable, and diverse college for students and employees while providing thought leadership and action-oriented impact to the communities we serve. The commitment called for meaningful and action-oriented change. Working with the leading equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) development firm HRx, Selkirk College embarked on an EDI journey in 2019 that has since included extensive analysis of policies and processes, delivery of employee and student engagement strategies, inclusive leadership development and training opportunities for board members, senior leadership, faculty, and employees. On-going work includes formal advice from an EDI advisory committee and an EDI implementation team, an EDI training and action plan, development of an inclusive leadership model, evolving teaching and service models, and changing practices and policies. The journey is far from over, but EDI is has become foundational to our work at Selkirk College.
