SLiDE: Scaling an Approach for Social Innovation in Colleges – A Facilitated Interactive Workshop (E/SI)

SLiDE (Service Learning in Design & Engineering) is a community building social innovation initiative. It was launched as an intentional response to a call to action for higher education institutions to build social infrastructure. Launched in 2018 SLiDE, has demonstrated a meaningful impact on students and the local social sector community. It brings together multidisciplinary teams of paid interns and course- based lab residencies to support the knowledge gap on digital technology within the social sector.
This interactive workshop will allow the participants to actively co-design the model that would be subsequently offered to other Colleges to launch a SLiDE “franchise” at their institution. The initial model considerations would be outlined, and direct input sought on the perspectives and interest of the participants using an enterprise design thinking exercise co-facilitated by our lab partner from IBM.
The Reflections: 7 Learnings from SLiDE over the last 3 years of running the initiative will also be presented. These major takeaways include key lessons on:
1) A social innovation approach that aligns community needs and student skills.
2) The importance of “student agency” and valuing students through meaningful work at a living wage.
3) The imperative to advance social infrastructure within colleges to better serve the social sector in our communities.
