Removing barriers: Making education and training more accessible by working with students, college members and communities (E/SI)

April 27, 2022 | 1:30 - 2:30

Location: Argyle A3
Track: Charting Teaching & Learning

Shaping education and training opportunities as collaborations between learners, education institutions, employers and the community fills gaps in student supports, is tied to improved labour market outcomes and builds capacity for a promising future. CICan and several member institutions developed foundational skills programs to entice post-secondary training participation from Indigenous peoples, newcomers, women, people with disabilities, and people from rural and remote locations. Strategies to develop the Pathways to Pre-Apprenticeship, Skills Compass and the ImpAct Projects are based on adapting promising practices to enhance skills development and college-sector participation from people from under-represented groups while strengthening the college and community collaboration to improve social and economic inclusion, infrastructure, and cohesion. Perspectives on program development and delivery and supports to reduce barriers to education and training for vulnerable groups across Canadian communities will be presented and promising practices, lessons learned, and practical tools will be shared to promote modeling innovation and replication in CICan member institutes.
