Make it! An Innovation Project for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) (E/SI)

May 7, 2019 | 13:45 - 14:45

Location: 225
Track: Entrepreneurial Approaches

Vancouver Community College (VCC) is leading an innovative project funded by IRCC which develops the entrepreneurial skills of women with refugee and immigrant experience using college resources as a maker space. In partnership with a local immigrant-serving organization, VCC provides training to a collective of women who face barriers to employment by focusing on developing soft skills, building knowledge of the Canadian business context, and providing access to needed expertise and facilities. The first phase of the project pilots the model with two cohorts: one working with VCC’s Fashion Design program and using the industrial sewing labs for product design and production, and the other with Culinary Arts in the commercial kitchens working with VCC Chefs. The second phase will see VCC collaborating with Okanagan College and a local immigrant-serving organization in that region of British Columbia to deliver the model in a more rural context. Promising practices from both phases will be gathered, reported on and made available for those interested. This project is of particular interest for colleges looking to support and build welcoming communities for newcomers to Canada.
