How to Build an Inclusive Employer Engagement Strategy (E/SI)

May 6, 2019 | 13:45 - 14:45

Location: Peller B
Track: Future Ready

City School by Mohawk and the Hamilton Port Authority will present their Employer Engagement Strategy, which focuses on applied research, meeting employer needs and creating accessible learning. Workshop participants will leave with the tools needed to create their own community-based strategy.

City School reduces barriers to postsecondary education by providing community-based education to under-served Hamiltonians. The Employer Engagement Strategy has expanded City School’s programming to meet the needs of both employers and residents. This included an applied research project, funded by the Ontario Centre for Workforce Innovation, with the goal of bridging the gap between the hiring needs of employers and Hamilton residents in need of employment.

The research team interviewed 24 of the 131 employers operating on Port land. With the findings, City School developed a new career pathways awareness course, “Careers at the Port.” This customizable model is being replicated in the health care and manufacturing sectors and has been identified as an innovative approach to talent acquisition strategies.
