Fostering innovation through applied research internships and postdoctoral fellowship (E/SI)

April 27, 2022 | 11:15 - 12:15

Location: Room 109
Track: Steering Innovation

Durham College (DC) continues to foster a culture of innovation on campus and expand the breadth of work-integrated learning (WIL) opportunities available to students. With Mitacs support, DC has increased applied research capacity through postdoctoral research and implemented applied research co-operative education experiences that incorporate research into curriculum and engage students in developing innovative solutions to real business and community challenges. Presenters will highlight benefits and challenges of collaborative research internships for students, industry and community partners, and post-secondary institutions by sharing outcomes of two collaborative research projects: (1) development of a novel virtual reality firefighter training simulation with City of Oshawa and (2) inventory optimization modelling with manufacturer Creation Technologies LP. Projects provided valuable research and training experience to students; realized significant value for partners through cost-savings, process improvement, and enhanced training; and launched DC’s first Mitacs-supported research internships and postdoctoral fellowship, creating a model for ongoing research and WIL at DC.
