Fostering Empathy: Strange Land Experiences & Professional Development for International Education (E/SI)

May 7, 2019 | 13:45 - 14:45

Location: 207-208
Track: Innovative Education

What happens when we engage faculty and staff in international education experiences?

‘Paddles & Pedagogy’ set out to answer this question with an international learning adventure in Mexico designed for the development of intercultural competencies and to gain newfound understandings of the challenges international students face when coming to a new culture.

In this presentation, participants will explore key principles of developing international learning adventures and consider how to apply lessons learned both inside the classroom for faculty and outside of the classroom for administrators. Workshop attendees will leave the workshop able to conceptualize the planning and lived experience of immersive, international adventure-based professional development for faculty and staff and able to theorize about the purposes and outcomes of such an endeavor.
