Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Policy: A Catalyst for College-Wide Culture Change (E)

From 2017 to 2018, Camosun College worked with the College community through continuous and ongoing community engagements to develop its Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) policy using a participatory and action-research approach. The College collected feedback from students and employees to understand what the terms “equity,” “diversity,” and “inclusion” mean to them and asked respondents to share examples where they experienced EDI at Camosun, share examples where the values of EDI are not reflected at the College, and asked respondents to identify how the College can advance EDI through practice. Based on the data, the College identified six high-level principles to be embedded in the draft EDI policy that included greater supports for persons with disability, Indigenization, HR practices through an EDI lens, accessible information on college services, systems, and processes, and curricula and instruction through an EDI lens. Placing EDI at the core of everything we do at the College is intended to enhance student learning and employee work experiences, and lead to College-wide culture change in alignment with contemporary practices in higher education teaching and learning.
