Cultivating Empathy – A Necessity for Inclusion (E)

May 6, 2019 | 13:45 - 14:45

Location: 221
Track: Student Success

Creating an educational environment that values diversity and is accessible to all learners takes courage, planning and something we often overlook, ’empathy’. Empathy is essential for advancing inclusion. It means being open to seeking out different perspectives than one’s own, not only in our day to day practice but in the policies, procedures and teaching that takes place. Empathy has the capacity to transform our very understanding of what it means to be inclusive. Empathy begins with self-awareness and understanding of one’s own capacity to be empathetic and learning what empathy looks like in our day to day communication with others. It requires practising the skills of ’empathetic listening’, a necessary precursor to inclusion. This workshop will focus on developing a deeper understanding of what it means to be empathetic and the relationship between empathy and inclusion. Participants will be engaged in exercises to hone their skills in empathy and consider how they can broaden inclusive practices in their institutions.
