Track: Wiring for Student Success

The newly opened Camosun College Alex & Jo Campbell Centre for Health and Wellness is receiving rave reviews. Five years ago, over 300 members of the Greater Victoria community including students were engaged in creating a collective vision for a new home for health and human service programs. Participants asked for a place to both educate and provide health and social services to improve the wellbeing of the community. The vision included an accessible, interdisciplinary, healthy centre with designated indigenous space and a Teaching Clinic, where students in practice learning could offer health services to the broader community. A proposal was made to government, funding was received and based on the College’s strategic plan, students and staff collaborated with the architectural firm to develop principles which guided the design. The result is a healthy building (exceeding LEED Gold) which offers innovative applied learning, is accessible to every person’s gender, cultural background and ability and offers a healthy, supportive environment that meets the needs of a diverse student body, faculty and staff and community. Join us to learn more about this major change initiative and the positive impact on the student experience.
