Best Practices in Quality Recognition of Prior Learning in Canada (EN)

May 6, 2019 | 11:00 - 12:00

Location: 201-202
Track: Student Success

This session convenes a panel of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)/Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)/Reconnaissance des acquis et des compétences (RAC) practitioners from colleges in three different Canadian provinces to discuss best practices in RPL/PLAR/RAC for advisors, assessors, and applicants. Using the framework 6 Steps for Quality RPL published by the Canadian Association for Prior Learning Assessment (CAPLA) as a guideline, panelists will highlight innovative approaches to RPL/PLAR/RAC at each step in the process. Panelists will situate RPL/PLAR/RAC within their particular provincial and institutional contexts. Drawing on research conducted in the field of RPL/PLAR/RAC, personal experience as practitioners, and shared experience as members of CAPLA, a national collegial network of RPL/PLAR/RAC practitioners, the panelists will “make a case” for RPL/PLAR/RAC as a process valuable to the college sector. In so doing, panelists will highlight the benefits of RPL/PLAR/RAC to applicants, students, faculty, curriculum, and the institution.
