A Steady Hand on the Tiller: Implementing Strategic Enrolment Management During the Gale-Force Winds of the COVID-19 Pandemic (E/SI)

In early 2019, BCIT charted a course to develop its first institute-wide Strategic Enrolment Management Plan. Following years of enrolment stability and targeted growth across a broad range of technology and trades programs, we thought we understood the task at hand: strengthening our position in international and domestic markets, finetuning our definition of optimum enrolment, and aligning a broad range of enrolment-related activities to create a seamless student experience. The COVID-19 pandemic had other plans in store for BCIT and for the post-secondary system. Suddenly facing new pressures and competing for time and attention, we chose to persist with implementation rather than waiting for clearer skies and calmer waters. In viewing the pandemic as the wind at our backs, we have treated SEM as a way to address some of our most pressing pandemic-related business problems and mitigate emerging risks. In so doing, we have demonstrated that the value of a solid plan is that it enables us to stay the course despite unexpected storms. As Executive Co-Sponsors of this ongoing work, Jennifer and Lisa will share our early successes and challenges with SEM as a work in progress.
